5 Tips for Growing Glorious Tomatoes in Las Vegas
Hello, fellow garden enthusiasts! As a tomato lover, I’ve had the pleasure (and challenge) of cultivating various delicious tomatoes right here in the arid desert climate of Las Vegas. Growing tomatoes in this unique environment can be incredibly rewarding, but it does require some special care and attention. Here are my top five tips for growing glorious tomatoes in Las Vegas.
- Choose Heat-Tolerant Varieties
The Las Vegas heat can be intense, especially during the summer months. Not all tomato varieties can withstand extreme temperatures, so selecting those that are heat-tolerant is essential. Some of my favorite varieties that thrive in the Las Vegas climate include:
Heatmaster- Vining. Good for slicing.
Phoenix- Bush type, full of flavor.
Solar Fire- Stipes of yellow and red make this tomato a real “looker”!
Bronze Torch- Cherry tomato. Exceptional flavor, texture, and sweetness.
- Timing is Everything
In Las Vegas, timing your planting is crucial. Aim to plant your tomatoes in late February to early March, ensuring they have time to establish before the extreme heat sets in. If you miss this window, try a second planting in late August for a fall harvest. The end of summer will be here before you know it, so you should look into getting your raised beds ready, now! - Provide Ample Shade
While tomatoes need abundant sunlight (8 hours a day, minimum), the intense Las Vegas sun can be too much. Providing shade, especially during the peak afternoon hours, can make a big difference. I recommend using shade cloth or even a beach umbrella to give your plants some relief. Aim for a 30-40% shade cloth, which reduces the sun’s harshness without depriving your plants of the light they need. - Water Wisely
Watering in a desert environment requires a strategic approach. Tomatoes need consistent moisture, but overwatering can lead to root problems. The best practice is to water deeply and infrequently. Early morning is the ideal time to water, allowing the plants to absorb moisture before the day’s heat. Drip irrigation systems or soaker hoses provide consistent, even moisture to the root zone while minimizing water evaporation. - Mulch, Mulch, Mulch
Mulching is a gardener’s best friend in Las Vegas. A thick layer of mulch around your tomato plants helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition. Organic mulch can be found at your local nursery or make your own compost. Apply a 2-3 inch layer around the base of your plants, being careful not to cover the stems directly.
Bonus Tip: Use a Tall Trellis or Obelisk.
If you are growing indeterminate varieties of tomatoes that like to climb, you will be needing more than just the average tomato cage.
Find a simple metal trellis or obelisk that is at least 5-6 feet tall. Yes, you read that right… it might seem tall at first, but just wait…you will need it in a few short weeks!
